November 26, 2009

ARCHITECTURAL CLIMATE IN HOLLAND AND ITALY. ON CONSTRUCTION AND SUSTAINABILITY. An architectural production which is conscious of environmental sustainability and energy saving issues is at the core of the conference – promoted by the Royal Netherlands Embassy in Rome – whose purpose is promote and illustrate cases of excellence in Holland and Italy.

The conference is the outcome of an analysis, pursued by the Embassy, which points out an ever increasing attention, in both countries, for issues related to construction and sustainability. By means of a presentation of a series of projects, by the Dutch and Italian guest speakers, the conference will highlight differences and similarities in the two countries’ approaches to the architectural project. “The research carried out by the Embassy -says Alphonsus Stoelinga, Dutch Ambassador in Rome- proves the topicality and the urgency of sustainable architecture. The conference will be a starting point for an exchange of practical experiences. Its final objective is to possibly identify opportunities for collaboration between the two countries.”

This is a key field of investogation for architecture, one for which both the Netherlands and Italy -despite their very different contexts- have gained a wide experience, supported by a wide range of built projects which are worth examining. In particular, the conference in Rome aims at highlighting:
• the meaning of sustainability in the visions and in the daily practices of architects and contractors today;
• a comparison between the Dutch and the Italian architectural and construction systems;
• an analysis of the Dutch and of the Italian contexts which may offer new ideas for facing issues of sustainability;
• the state of new technologies;
• the institutional framework;
• the opportunities offered by Expo 2015.
